福野夜高祭のタイムスケジュール(英語)

May 1st

6:30 p.m. to late night: Procession of 21 lantern floats (including seven giant lanterns)
Beautiful lanterns made by the seven neighborhoods parade through the streets of town.

 

9 p.m.: Lantern contest award ceremony begins (at the crossroads in the center of town)
Judges recognize the year’s best lantern floats.

May 2nd

6:30 p.m. to late night: Lanterns parade through town (same as above)
The procession continues from the night before, with lantern floats making their way through the streets of town.

 

8:30 p.m.: Yotaka dance and drum performances begin (in front of the lantern float mural at the center of town)
Exciting performances of traditional dances and taiko drumming.

 

11 p.m. to late night: Hikiai (lantern fight)
The highlight of the festival. Lantern bearers destroy each other’s floats in an intense, ritualized fight.

May 3rd

10 a.m.: Procession of four hikiyama wagon floats begins
Four wagon floats from the neighborhoods of Kanmachi and Nanatsuya, Shinmachi, Uramachi and Tatsumicho, and Yokocho gather alongside a house float (a float accompanied by singers and musicians) at the center of town. Participants take part in a ceremony before departing for Fukuno Shinmei Shrine. (Note: Parade will be cancelled in case of rain.)

 

1 p.m.: Divine palanquin begins its rounds
A divine palanquin departs from Fukuno Shinmei Shrine. The four hikiyama wagons also depart from the shrine and parade through their respective neighborhoods.
